Publisher and politician, Dele Momodu, has condemned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over its decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing it as one of the most reckless choices in Nigeria’s democratic history.
The PDP, during its National Executive Council meeting on Monday, August 25, announced that its presidential candidate for the 2027 election would come from Southern Nigeria.
Reacting to the decision, Momodu accused the party of weakening itself by giving in to what he called “cheap blackmail” from opposition figures secretly working in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
He argued that the party had embarrassed itself by pretending to act boldly while in reality serving the interest of President Bola Tinubu.
Momodu alleged that the real force behind the zoning decision was Nyesom Wike, who he said had been dictating to PDP governors that were too afraid to resist him.
He also recalled that these same leaders could not protect Governor Sim Fubara in Rivers State when his administration was under serious threat.
He reminded Nigerians that Wike once opposed zoning in 2022 and even lobbied to be vice president to a northern candidate, yet now insists that power must return to the South.
According to Momodu, the zoning plan simply clears the way for Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, as Wike would ensure PDP structures are used to support him.
He described Tinubu as the “joint candidate” of both APC and PDP, stressing that speculations about Goodluck Jonathan, Peter Obi or Seyi Makinde contesting under PDP were false.
He further criticized the hypocrisy behind the decision, pointing out that after the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, no one demanded that power return to the North when Goodluck Jonathan completed the term and even contested for another.
Jonathan could have ruled for nine years if he had not lost to Muhammadu Buhari in 2015. He also noted that those now crying for zoning were silent when Tinubu ran on a Muslim-Muslim ticket.
Momodu insisted that truth should not be selective and accused the PDP of deceiving Nigerians about its plans for 2027.
