Nigerian monarch, Joseph Oloyede jailed for fraud in United States

Oba Joseph Oloyede, the traditional ruler of Ipetumodu in Osun State, has been sentenced to prison in the United States.

Judge Christopher Boyko gave the verdict on Tuesday, sending the monarch to jail over a $4.2 million fraud case.

Reports say Oloyede and a Nigerian pastor, Edward Oluwasanmi, were arrested in April 2024 for their involvement in a COVID-19 loan scam.

Court documents showed that both men filed fake loan applications using false details to secure the money.

Justice Boyko sentenced Oloyede to 56 months in prison, with an additional three years of supervised release after serving his jail term. He was also ordered to repay $4,408,543 as restitution.

The US Attorney’s Office in Ohio revealed that investigators had already seized $96,006 from the monarch, and his Medina home would also be taken over.

Earlier in July 2025, Pastor Oluwasanmi was sentenced to 27 months in prison for his role in the same fraud scheme.
