Gospel, Afrobeats artists copying my song – Jaywon claims

Nigerian singer Jaywon has said that both gospel and Afrobeats musicians have been copying the style of his 2012 hit, This Year.

He made this statement after criticizing Billboard for not including the song in its list of the Best Afrobeats Songs of All-Time.

Jaywon argued that no other song on the list has had as much influence on Nigerian music and culture as This Year.

On his X account, he wrote, “This Year by Jaywon had more viral moments and cultural impact than some songs Billboard chose to include.”

He added, “The song has been trending since 2012 and continues to be popular. Year after year, both gospel and Afrobeats artists try to copy the vibe, but we remain strong. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again—no song on that list has more cultural impact than #ThisYear by Jaywon.”

According to INFOLAND, 2Face’s African Queen topped Billboard’s recently released list of the Top 50 Best Afrobeats Songs of All-Time.

Other songs in the top five include Wizkid’s Ojuelegba, Flavour’s Nwa Baby, Rema’s Calm Down, and CKay’s Love Nwantiti.
