Aston Villa winger Leon Bailey joins Roma on loan

Leon Bailey has sealed a move from Aston Villa to Italian giants Roma on a season-long loan.

The Jamaican winger will play for Roma throughout the 2025/26 season, with the club having the option to make the transfer permanent next summer.

Bailey first joined Villa in 2021 from Bayer Leverkusen for £25 million. During his time at the club, he scored 22 goals in 144 appearances.

His best season came in 2023/24 when he found the net 14 times in 52 matches across all competitions. However, his form dipped last season as he managed only two goals in 38 games.

Despite the dip, Bailey signed a new deal with Villa in February 2024, keeping him under contract until 2027.

Roma will reportedly pay €2 million (£1.7m) for the loan, with the option to make the move permanent for €23 million (£19.8m). For Roma, it’s a low-risk chance to get the winger back to his best, while Villa benefit financially.

The Italian club announced his arrival with excitement, noting that Bailey is the first Jamaican footballer to ever join Roma.

Born in Kingston, Bailey moved to Europe at just 13 years old. He went on to play for Genk, Bayer Leverkusen, and Aston Villa, making 377 career appearances and scoring 76 goals.

At Roma, he will wear the number 31 shirt as he begins this new chapter of his career.

Bailey also becomes the second Premier League player to sign for Roma this summer, following Brighton striker Evan Ferguson.
