Chief Ayedun Ifadare Owodunni, the founder of Agbotifayo Empire, has urged all Yoruba people to stay true to their cultural and spiritual heritage rather than neglecting it.
He explained that ignoring these traditions is like cutting off a river from its source, stressing that the Yoruba must remain connected to their roots.
The priest, widely known as Agbotifayo, reminded the people that traditional deities have always been a source of help, whether they live in Nigeria or abroad. He made this call on Wednesday in Isara Remo during the annual Ifa sacrifice held to mark the 2025 Isese Day celebration.
Agbotifayo noted that there is no Yoruba family without a deity connected to their lineage. According to him, Africans have evidence that these practices have guided and supported them for generations. Abandoning culture and tradition, he said, is like forgetting one’s true identity.
He also praised Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for recognizing traditional religion through the declaration of August 20 as a public holiday for Isese Day.
He described the governor’s gesture as a step in the right direction, pointing out that for many decades, only Islam and Christianity enjoyed official recognition through public holidays while traditional worshippers were left out.
The chief priest recalled that while in school, Nigerians were taught that the three major religions are Traditional, Christianity, and Islam.
He questioned why traditional religion was neglected for so long but expressed joy that worshippers now have their own special day to celebrate.
Agbotifayo, however, appealed to Governor Abiodun to give more support towards strengthening traditional religion in Ogun State so it can become more widely respected. He concluded with prayers for peace, growth, and development in Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
