A Nigerian influencer who promotes home births without medical help has been arrested in Australia. She faces manslaughter charges after a baby she assisted in delivering died.
Oyebola Coxon, a midwife who works privately and supports natural at-home births, helped a woman give birth in Wallsend, New South Wales, last October.
According to reports, the 36-year-old ignored warning signs during the birth and the mother’s requests to go to a hospital, leaving her in labor for two days.
The mother was eventually taken to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, where the baby was delivered by emergency cesarean section. Police stated that both the mother and newborn had serious medical problems, and the baby passed away eight days after the home birth attempt.
Coxon, originally from Italy, has shared content on Instagram under the name Mamma Informata, promoting “positive births” and encouraging women not to follow doctors’ advice.
She has posted videos promoting home births, claiming conditions like gestational diabetes aren’t real and suggesting that blood tests and ultrasounds are unnecessary. Coxon also offered paid online courses aimed at expectant mothers, teaching about childbirth and breastfeeding preparation.
After police investigated the baby’s death, Coxon was arrested on August 14 in Wallsend, New South Wales. She has been charged with manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm, according to the New South Wales Police.
Coxon was granted bail, with conditions preventing her from providing any guidance, training, or services related to childbirth or pregnancy. Her trial is scheduled to start on October 15 at Newcastle Crown Court.
