Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet, has officially nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. He praised Trump’s efforts in helping stop a recent violent clash between Cambodia and Thailand.

In a Facebook post shared on Thursday night, August 7, Hun Manet revealed a letter he sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In the letter, he credited Trump for playing a major part in ending one of Southeast Asia’s most serious conflicts in years.

The letter highlighted Trump’s quick action, which helped avoid what could have been a devastating war. His involvement helped save lives and allowed peace to return to the region.

Reuters reported that on July 26, Trump made a phone call to both Cambodian and Thai leaders. This broke a deadlock in the peace talks. Just two days later, both sides met in Malaysia and reached a ceasefire agreement. On Thursday, both countries promised to avoid further fighting and let Southeast Asian monitors oversee peace efforts.

The conflict lasted five days. It started with small gunfire but quickly turned into heavy fighting, including rockets and an airstrike by a Thai F-16 jet. It led to the deaths of 43 people and forced over 300,000 people to flee their homes.

Trump’s nomination had already been suggested last week by Cambodia’s deputy prime minister. He also thanked Trump for helping reduce U.S. tariffs on Cambodian garment exports—from 49% down to 19%—which protected an important part of the country’s economy.

Trump has also received praise from other countries for his role in promoting peace. In June, Pakistan announced it would nominate him for easing tensions with India. Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed he had also submitted Trump’s name for the prestigious award.
