Single-term: ‘He’s talking out of ignorance’ – Farouq Aliyu blasts Peter Obi
Farouq Aliyu, a former Minority Leader in the House of Representatives, has spoken against a promise made by Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Obi had recently said he would serve only one term as president if elected in 2027. But Aliyu thinks the idea is not realistic and shows a lack of understanding.
While speaking on Arise Television’s “Prime Time” show on Wednesday, Aliyu criticized Obi’s comment. He described it as empty political talk meant to get support from the public. According to him, Obi does not understand the real challenges of leading a country like Nigeria.
Aliyu explained that it is easy to make promises when someone is not in power, but things are very different when you are actually leading. He believes Obi’s promise to serve just one term is only a strategy to win votes and not something based on serious planning.
He added that Obi’s time as a governor in a Nigerian state does not prepare him for the much bigger task of running the entire country. In his view, Nigeria’s issues are far more complex than what a state governor deals with.
Aliyu said bluntly that Obi is speaking out of ignorance. He insisted that managing a state is not the same as managing a diverse and complicated nation like Nigeria.
Earlier, Peter Obi had said he was willing to lead for only one term if Nigerians gave him their support in the 2027 elections. But Farouq Aliyu believes this kind of promise does not show a real understanding of the demands of national leadership.
