A top Lagos State government official, Mahmood Adegbite, has raised serious concerns about the quality of borehole water being consumed by residents in Lekki. He claims that people drilling boreholes in the area are likely drinking contaminated water.

Speaking during a recent meeting with community stakeholders, Adegbite, who is the Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services, explained that this contamination issue is linked to poor wastewater treatment in the Lekki axis.

He mentioned that the city experienced heavy rainfall recently, which is unusual for August, a month usually known for a short dry spell. He noted that this strange weather pattern is one of many complex challenges affecting Lagos.

Despite government efforts to tackle flooding and environmental issues, Adegbite admitted that there is still a lot of work to be done. One major concern, he said, is the untreated wastewater that continues to flow in the area.

According to him, borehole water in Lekki might be mixing with this wastewater, making it unsafe for drinking. He bluntly stated that most people in the area are likely drinking “shit water.”

Adegbite added that the government has plans in place to treat all wastewater in Lekki. Once this is fully implemented, he believes it will reduce health risks and prevent the spread of diseases caused by dirty water.
