PoS operator electrocuted as high-tension wire falls on him in Anambra

A heartbreaking incident has occurred in Nibo, a community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, where a newly married Point-of-Sale (PoS) operator was electrocuted after a high-tension wire fell on him.

The unfortunate event happened over the weekend while the young man was standing outside his shop. His shop was located directly beneath a high-tension power line. Sadly, the cable snapped and landed on him, leading to his untimely death.

A disturbing video now circulating on social media shows the man’s lifeless body lying on the ground. The high-tension cable can be seen draped over him, with smoke rising from the spot due to the electric current.

Local sources confirmed that the victim had recently gotten married, which makes the loss even more tragic for his loved ones.

Reacting to the incident, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA), Ossy Onuko, expressed deep sadness over the development. He explained that this unfortunate event highlights why the agency frequently carries out awareness campaigns and enforcement against building or doing business under high-tension wires.

He stated that people often criticize ACTDA when they take action to remove illegal structures under power lines, but the agency’s primary goal is public safety, not punishment. He described the incident as extremely painful, calling it a “suicide mission” to operate a shop under such dangerous conditions.

He emphasized that the loss of life in this situation could have been prevented and should serve as a warning to others. According to him, tragedies like this are the result of ignoring safety rules and warnings.

Onuko urged the public to take personal responsibility for safety, rather than waiting for officials to intervene. He called on everyone to help spread the message and educate others on the dangers of building or trading under high-tension wires. He also offered prayers for the peaceful rest of the victim’s soul and encouraged others to avoid similar risks in the future.

He concluded by saying that no life should be lost due to carelessness and that simple actions taken in time can prevent tragic outcomes.
