President Bola Tinubu has shown appreciation to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, by giving each player a cash reward of $100,000. This comes after the team’s victory at the recently concluded African Women’s Basketball Championship.
Alongside the monetary reward, every player will receive a new home as part of the president’s recognition of their achievement on the continental stage.
The coaching staff also received a generous reward, with each coach being gifted $50,000 for their role in the team’s success.
To further honour the team, President Tinubu conferred on each player and coach the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), acknowledging their contribution to the nation’s pride through sports.
This announcement follows a similar $100,000 reward given to the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, after their win at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco — a move that previously sparked public discussion.
Tinubu’s latest gesture reinforces his commitment to celebrating and encouraging sporting excellence in Nigeria.
