Peter Obi, a former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, has praised Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, for winning the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship. This makes it their fifth victory in a row at the tournament.

In a message titled “MISSION V ACCOMPLISHED”, Obi said the win reflects the strong will, unity, and determination of Nigerian athletes. He said D’Tigress have once again proven themselves to be the top team in Africa.

He noted that winning the championship five times back-to-back is an incredible achievement, not just for Nigeria but for the whole continent. Obi described the players as bold, energetic, and unstoppable, and said they played with all their hearts in every game.

Obi thanked the team for representing Nigeria with pride and excellence. He highlighted their bravery and the teamwork that brought them success.

He also appreciated the team’s coach, Rena Wakama, for her leadership. Obi praised her for her focus, hard work, and the winning spirit she passed on to the players.

D’Tigress beat Mali in the final game, which took place on Sunday, August 3, at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. With this win, Nigeria set a new record by becoming the first country to win five consecutive AfroBasket titles.
