A leader in the Labour Party, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, who belongs to a faction of the party, has said that the party’s presidential ticket for 2027 is not reserved for anyone in particular. He made this known during an interview with Trust TV, where he addressed the growing support Peter Obi seems to be getting from leaders of the African Democratic Congress. According to him, Obi’s new political alliances might affect his chances of being the Labour Party’s flagbearer in the next election.
Ibrahim stated clearly that Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, who was the party’s vice-presidential candidate in the 2023 election, is just as qualified as Peter Obi to contest for the presidency. He pointed out that the position is not automatically meant for Obi, and anyone who is interested can enter the race. He emphasized that the party will create a fair process for all who want to contest, including Baba-Ahmed, if he decides to run. He also added that if Baba-Ahmed picks the nomination form, gets supporters, and wins the primary, he can become the party’s candidate.
However, Ibrahim warned that candidates must be fully loyal to the Labour Party. He said those who are still working with other political parties while trying to remain in LP could be disqualified. He stressed that no one can be part of two parties at the same time and still expect to represent LP.
His comments came after Baba-Ahmed recently said he might run for president in 2027, but only if Peter Obi chooses not to contest. Even though he expressed interest, Baba-Ahmed also said he is not desperate to become president. He made it clear that he still stands by Obi and believes the former Anambra State governor should be given another chance to run under the Labour Party.
