Senator Bassey Aniekan has criticized a protest in Ghana where some locals called for Nigerians to be deported. He said the protest was unfair and based on harmful generalisations about Nigerians.
A video trending on social media shows some Ghanaians holding signs and saying that Nigerians are not behaving like Ghanaians. This has caused fear among many Nigerians living in Ghana and their families back home in Nigeria.
Senator Aniekan, who heads the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, urged everyone to remain calm and handle the situation with care. He pointed out that Nigerians are generally peaceful and hardworking. He admitted that while a few may have done wrong, it is wrong to label all Nigerians as bad.
He reminded both nations of their strong friendship and shared history. Nigeria and Ghana are part of ECOWAS, a group that promotes peace in West Africa. He said both countries should use dialogue to solve problems, not anger or hate.
He also advised Nigerians in Ghana not to fight back or react with violence. He warned the public and media not to spread unconfirmed news, especially about claims that Nigerian businesses in Ghana are being destroyed. He said there is no proof of such incidents.
Finally, he shared that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, is already discussing the matter with Ghanaian leaders. He praised both the Nigerian and Ghanaian ambassadors for stepping in quickly and urged everyone to avoid using hateful words so the situation doesn’t get worse.
