Flood Displaces 1,664 in Sokoto State

On July 17, 2024, severe flooding in Sokoto State’s Gada Local Government Area resulted in the displacement of 1,664 individuals from their homes. This disaster, caused by torrential rains, has significantly impacted four communities: Dantudu, Balakozo, Gidan Tudu, and Tsitse.

Impact on Communities

  • Dantudu: The flood affected 62 houses and displaced 71 households.
  • Balakozo: In this area, 33 houses were damaged, impacting 48 households.
  • Gidan Tudu: Floodwaters damaged 38 houses and affected 52 households.
  • Tsitse: The most severely hit, Tsitse experienced damage to 68 houses, affecting 89 households.

Additional Damage

In addition to the displacement, the flood caused extensive damage to agricultural land. Several hectares of farmland were destroyed, severely affecting local crop production. Livestock were also hit hard, with many sheep and goats lost due to the flooding.

Response and Recovery

The Sokoto Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) is actively involved in providing assistance to the affected communities. Efforts are underway to deliver emergency relief and support to those who have lost their homes and livelihoods. The agency’s Information Officer, Abdullahi Ghani, has emphasized the scale of the disaster and the ongoing response efforts to mitigate the impact.

The flood’s impact on homes, agriculture, and livestock underscores the need for continued support and recovery efforts to help these communities rebuild and recover from the disaster.
