UNIPORT honours Wike, names convocation arena after FCT Minister

The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has honoured Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), by naming its newly completed convocation arena after him. The university also awarded him an honorary doctorate in Political Science.

The new arena was officially opened on Saturday by Rivers State’s Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retd). The event was part of UNIPORT’s 35th Combined Convocation Ceremony and its 50th Anniversary celebration.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Owunari Georgewill recalled that the university’s first convocation in 1982 was held in an older arena. He expressed pride in holding the 35th convocation in this newly built structure, which was constructed during Wike’s time as Governor of Rivers State.

Vice Admiral Ibas praised Wike’s strong support for education and infrastructure. He noted that the idea and construction of the convocation arena under Wike’s leadership reflect a lasting legacy.

Describing the arena, Ibas said it is more than a building—it’s a place where students will be celebrated, where academic success will be recognized, and where future leaders will be honoured. He added that it will also host important events such as innovation showcases and policy discussions.

Wike, who studied at UNIPORT, thanked the university for the honour. He said the award meant a lot to him and his family, and he expressed deep gratitude.

He shared that the university gave him a strong foundation in both learning and character, which helped shape his journey in politics and leadership. Wike said this is why he always feels the need to give back to the institution.

Other recipients of honorary doctorate degrees included First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, and Aminu Masari, Chairman of the TETFund Board of Trustees.
