Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has asked for a full investigation into how a building used by students of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo, collapsed. He said that most cases like this happen because of human mistakes or because people fail to follow building regulations, which puts lives at risk.
He expressed his disappointment, saying that in a time when there are many trained professionals and clear building standards, it’s sad to still hear about buildings collapsing. This was part of his reaction to the incident.
The instruction for the investigation was made public in a statement released on Saturday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, and shared with journalists in Abakaliki.
Governor Nwifuru asked all the right government agencies to improve their inspection of construction projects, making sure they monitor everything from the beginning to the end of the building process.
He also directed the Ministry of Capital City Development to make sure that no one starts a building project without first getting proper approval. He said human life is too important to take chances with.
Nwifuru also called on professional groups like the Nigerian Society of Engineers and the Nigerian Institute of Building to take their roles seriously. He reminded them that their image is at stake and urged them to work hard to prevent future building collapses.
Finally, he assured the public that anyone found guilty after the investigation will face legal consequences. He also encouraged developers to always hire trained professionals when building.
