Chelsea have run into problems in their efforts to sign Ajax defender Jorrel Hato during this summer’s transfer window.
The issue came up after Ajax reportedly asked Chelsea to pay £52 million for the young centre-back, a price that may be too high for the English club.
Chelsea are eager to wrap up a deal for the 19-year-old before the 2025/26 Premier League season begins.
Hato has already informed Ajax that he wants to leave this summer. He was not part of the squad that played against Celtic in a pre-season match on Thursday, adding to the signs that he’s ready to move on.
The Netherlands international has agreed personal terms with Chelsea, but both clubs have not yet settled on a transfer fee.
According to Dutch outlet De Telegraaf, Ajax are expecting a fee between £47.7 million and £52 million to release Hato.
So far, Chelsea have offered £34.7 million, which falls short of Ajax’s asking price. Talks are ongoing, but there’s still a gap between both clubs in terms of valuation.
Whether Chelsea will increase their offer or look elsewhere remains to be seen as the transfer window continues.
