Residents flee as gunmen invade Benue community

Uikpam, a town in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, was attacked by gunmen late Friday night, causing fear and panic across the area.

The attack happened around 10:30 pm, when the gunmen entered the town and began shooting randomly. This made people run for their lives in different directions.

Jimin Geoffrey, who once worked as a media aide to former governor Samuel Ortom, spoke about the incident on Facebook the next day, expressing deep concern over what happened.

He said the gunshots caused chaos, with hundreds of people running into the bush or towards Daudu, a nearby town, just to stay alive.

Some people had to spend the whole night in the bush, battling mosquitoes and darkness. Many got hurt while trying to escape through the thick forest paths.

Geoffrey visited Uikpam himself the next morning to find out what happened. He confirmed that many residents heard gunshots. He also noted that the town has hosted an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp for years and is now left without enough protection.

He warned that Uikpam remains at serious risk of further attacks, especially from armed herdsmen. He appealed to the Benue State Government to bring back the mobile police officers that were recently removed from the area. According to him, their return would help restore the people’s trust and sense of security.

Finally, Geoffrey called on both state and federal governments to act quickly before things get worse. He urged them to strengthen security in Uikpam so that the residents won’t have to face another night of fear and danger.
