Tragic Fire at Chinese Shopping Mall Claims 16 Lives (Video)

A tragic fire broke out at a shopping mall in Zigong, Sichuan Province, southwestern China, killing at least 16 people. The fire started in the 14-story building, which houses a department store, offices, restaurants, and a movie theater, on Wednesday night. Firefighters and rescue teams worked tirelessly until early Thursday, managing to pull 75 people to safety.

State media reported that the fire began at the bottom of the building, and preliminary investigations suggest that construction operations might have caused the blaze. However, authorities are conducting a more detailed inquiry to determine the exact cause.

Videos of the incident circulated on social media, showing thick black smoke billowing from the lower levels of the building and engulfing it completely. The emergency department has urged the public not to spread rumors about the incident.

Local media mentioned that firefighters used drones and water sprays to control the flames.

Fire hazards continue to be a significant issue in China, with 947 fire-related deaths reported from January to May 2024, a 19% increase from the previous year. The National Fire and Rescue Administration noted that public places like hotels and restaurants are particularly prone to fires, often caused by faulty electrical or gas lines and negligence.
