Peter Obi, one of the top politicians eyeing the presidency in 2027, has questioned why Nnamdi Kanu is still being held in detention. He said it doesn’t make sense for the government to continue keeping him behind bars.
During an interview on Channels TV’s Sunday Politics on July 6, Obi said the matter needed a political solution. He explained that cases like Kanu’s, and other similar situations in Nigeria, shouldn’t be handled only through force or punishment.
Obi pointed out that most of the allegations against Kanu seem to be about using strong or disrespectful language towards government leaders. He wondered if that alone was enough reason to keep someone locked up for so long.
When asked if he would approach such cases differently if he were in power, Obi said yes. He shared that he would prefer talking things out and listening to all sides involved.
Obi, who ran for president under the Labour Party in 2023, has always pushed for peaceful and inclusive ways to fix Nigeria’s problems. He believes the best path to lasting peace is through honest conversations and understanding.
