I would’ve stolen N36b, $150m I left as Anambra gov – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, who used to be the governor of Anambra State, has replied to those who accuse him of being corrupt. He said if he wanted to steal money, he could have easily done so before leaving office.

He shared that he left N36 billion and $150 million in the state’s account when he finished his time as governor. He explained that he could have stolen the money, but he chose not to.

Obi, who was the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election, spoke about this during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics show.

When he was asked about his name appearing in the Panama Papers, Obi said he has nothing to hide and even wants a full investigation into the claims.

He explained that a real thief does not leave behind what he could have stolen. Obi promised that if he becomes Nigeria’s president, he will seriously fight corruption.

According to reports, many of Obi’s supporters strongly believe in him. However, some Nigerians still don’t trust him or think he is the right person to lead.

When asked if people can trust him with power, Obi said he kept all the promises he made while campaigning for governor of Anambra. He said he talked about improving education and health and he achieved those goals.

He explained that he made sure children were always in school, and there was clear progress in the education sector while he was in office.

He also said that when he became governor, there was not a single school of nursing in the state. But before he left, he had built several.

He mentioned that he also worked on building roads in rural areas. He added that when a leader and his family don’t steal, it helps set a good example.

Obi said again that he didn’t touch the N36 billion and $150 million left in the state’s funds. He repeated that people should look into the Panama Papers to find out the full truth.
