Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has spoken out against the idea of his old club signing Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez this summer.
The French ex-player said Martinez, who helped Argentina win the World Cup, might bring unwanted attention to Chelsea if he joins the club.
Martinez has been linked with both Chelsea and Manchester United in the ongoing summer transfer window. But Gallas believes Chelsea should not go for him.
Gallas explained that while Martinez is a talented goalkeeper and has done well since moving to Aston Villa from Arsenal, he doesn’t think the player fits the style or image of the Chelsea squad under new coach Enzo Maresca.
He pointed out that Martinez has shown some controversial behaviour on the pitch. Gallas said no top goalkeeper acts the way Martinez does, like grabbing his crotch or dancing after making a save.
He added that even someone like Jens Lehmann, known for being intense, never acted that way. In Gallas’s view, Martinez could bring too much negative spotlight to Chelsea.
