Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju is upset about the arrest of a man in Anambra State. He says the man, Ugochukwu Ukeje, was treated unfairly by security officers.
According to Adeyanju, Ukeje is a trader at the Onitsha main market. He was arrested on June 24 by members of a state task force created by the Anambra government. Four other people were also picked up with him.
Adeyanju said the only reason the men were arrested was because they looked like touts. He explained that the officers gave no other reason or evidence for the arrest.
He added that Ukeje’s phone was taken after he was taken to the police station. When a neighbor came to help bail him out, the police reportedly asked for ₦200,000 before they would release him.
Adeyanju is now calling for justice and wants the authorities to stop such unfair treatment of innocent people.
