Terror as American Airlines plane catches fire mid-flight

An American Airlines flight shocked passengers when it caught fire in the air, causing fear and panic among those onboard.

The plane had just taken off from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and was heading to Charlotte, North Carolina, on Wednesday, June 25. Not long after takeoff, flames were seen coming from one of the plane’s engines.

There were 153 passengers and six crew members on the plane. After people saw the fire, the pilots quickly turned back to the airport for an emergency landing.

Videos shared online showed black smoke trailing behind the aircraft. Flames could also be seen coming from the engine area.

The plane landed safely shortly after and was examined by airport officials.

Thankfully, no one on board was hurt, according to reports.

A construction worker named Richard Pedrosa, who saw the plane in the air, said he heard a loud noise before spotting the engine burning. He told The Las Vegas Review-Journal that he feared the plane might explode.

Richard added, “I was scared and just hoped everyone on board would be fine.”

Later, American Airlines said their maintenance team found no sign that the engine had actually caught fire.

In a statement, the airline explained: “Flight 1665 returned to Las Vegas soon after takeoff because of a mechanical problem. The plane made it back on its own and all passengers got off safely.”

They also thanked their crew for handling the situation calmly and said they were working hard to help passengers reach their destinations.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has said it will look into what happened.
