Flamengo pulled off a brilliant second-half comeback to defeat Chelsea 3-1 in a Club World Cup match on Friday. Bruno Henrique, who came off the bench, made a big difference in the game, helping the Brazilian team get the win.
Over 54,000 excited Flamengo fans watched their team bounce back after being behind at halftime. The crowd’s energy helped push the players to turn things around.
Chelsea scored first in the 13th minute. Pedro Neto took advantage of a mistake in Flamengo’s defense to give his team the early lead.
Even though Flamengo tried to attack in the first half, they couldn’t break through Chelsea’s defense before the break.
Things changed in the second half when 34-year-old Bruno Henrique entered the game in the 56th minute. Just six minutes later, he scored the equalizer with a header, after a great cross from Gonzalo Plata.
Flamengo quickly scored again. In the 65th minute, defender Danilo made it 2-1, finishing a corner kick that Bruno Henrique had helped set up.
Chelsea’s situation got worse when substitute Nicolas Jackson was sent off in the 68th minute for a dangerous tackle on Flamengo’s Ayrton Lucas.
The Brazilian side sealed the win in the 83rd minute. Wallace Yan scored from a loose ball, making it 3-1 and sending Flamengo fans into celebration.
This result continues the winning streak for South American teams in this year’s tournament. A day before, Botafogo also surprised fans by beating European champions Paris Saint-Germain.
Chelsea had started their tournament with a win over Los Angeles FC. Now, they’ll try to recover in their last group game against Esperance of Tunisia.
