2027: APC will decide Tinubu’s running mate after National Convention – Secretary, Basiru

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has made it clear that President Bola Tinubu’s running mate for the 2027 election will not be announced until the party holds its national convention. This was revealed by Ajibola Basiru, the party’s National Secretary.

Basiru explained that the national convention, which usually takes place about one year before the general election, is when decisions like this are made. So, for now, there is no confirmed running mate.

He also mentioned that President Tinubu has already received wide support from APC leaders to contest in 2027. However, the issue of picking a vice presidential candidate has not been discussed yet.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief program, Basiru said, “Mr. President was endorsed at the national summit held in the Presidential Villa. Many of our party leaders strongly support him.”

He added that no one has suggested that President Tinubu wants to replace the current Vice President, Kashim Shettima, and that the running mate issue is not something the party is currently focusing on.

Recently, a meeting of APC stakeholders from the North-East zone in Gombe State ended in confusion. The APC Vice Chairman for the North-East, Mustapha Salihu, had endorsed President Tinubu for re-election but didn’t mention Shettima’s name.

This upset some party members, especially the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum, who protested and insisted that Shettima’s name should not be left out of any endorsement.

For now, the APC is asking everyone to be patient, as decisions about the 2027 elections will be handled properly at the right time.
