Police foil kidnapping attempt, arrest two suspects in Niger

Police officers in Niger State have stopped a planned kidnapping in Kata, located in the New Bwari area.

Two men, Japhta James (28) from Ijah-Gwari in Tafa and Usman Ibrahim (30) from Sabon-Gari in Abuja, were caught during the operation.

According to the police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the two men had entered a home in Kata and tried to kidnap a woman. Their plan was interrupted when officers from the Tafa Division quickly arrived after getting a report.

When the suspects were caught, they were found with several dangerous items. These included a locally made gun, knives, a walkie-talkie, bullets, mobile phones, an ATM card, electric tasers, pepper spray, and some charms.

During questioning, both suspects admitted they were trying to kidnap the woman so they could ask her brother for ransom money.

The police also revealed that some of the tools the suspects carried were given to them by another accomplice who pretended to be part of a local security group, known as the civilian joint task force.

The two men are still being held and will be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigations and court action.
