Nigerian Customs Seizes 85 Drums of Petrol Smuggled to Cameroon

Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 85 drums of petrol destined for Cameroon, discovered near the Nigeria-Cameroon border in Adamawa State. Additionally, 795 25-litre jerry cans of petrol were seized along a bush path in Sahuda. The Customs Area Controller of Adamawa/Taraba Area Command, Comptroller Garba Bashir, announced these seizures at a press briefing in Yola. The operations, conducted from last month to date, also uncovered a car with a hidden compartment carrying petrol along the Girei-Wuro Boki axis.

Over the past six weeks, the Area Command covering Adamawa and Taraba states seized various items worth N36,952,342 in duty value. Despite the removal of petrol subsidies, smuggling to neighboring countries like Cameroon persists due to higher demand and prices there. Local individuals exploit these price differentials for personal profit.

Comptroller Bashir emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen enforcement against smugglers, vowing to eradicate the practice completely.
