Segun Sowunmi, who used to speak for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has said Peter Obi is his biggest disappointment. He thinks Obi is too open to joining a new opposition coalition that doesn’t seem serious.
Sowunmi made these remarks on Arise TV’s “Prime Time” show. He said Obi missed a great chance to use his popularity by not joining with the main opposition party.
He believes the PDP should be the foundation of any strong opposition group. According to him, the current coalition movement looks selfish and only helps a few politicians.
Sowunmi also warned Obi that some of these politicians are just trying to use his popularity to get ahead in the 2027 elections.
He said he hoped Obi would work with others to challenge the current government in a smart and united way. Sowunmi added that even if they lost, at least they would’ve shown a strong effort and helped bring the country together.
Sowunmi revealed he had told Obi to make up his mind by May 29, or he might support President Tinubu in the next election. He said he once saw Obi as a leader who could represent the Igbo people and also have support across Nigeria. But now, he fears Obi is throwing that away by chasing a different path.
Peter Obi, the former governor of Anambra State, left the PDP in 2022 to join the Labour Party. Since then, he has become a powerful voice in Nigerian politics.
Even though Obi came third in the 2023 presidential election with over six million votes, he still has strong support, especially among young Nigerians.
