Elon Musk has spoken out strongly against a large government spending bill backed by former President Donald Trump. He called the bill a “disgusting abomination” because of the large amount of money and the way it is being spent.
On Tuesday, Musk shared his opinion on his social media platform X. He said the bill is full of unnecessary spending and he couldn’t stay quiet any longer.
Musk criticized the politicians who supported the bill. He said they should be ashamed and they know they made the wrong choice.
The bill, known as the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” continues the 2017 tax cuts from Trump’s presidency. It also gives more money to border security and the military. However, it reduces money for programs like Medicaid and food assistance. The House has already passed the bill, and now the Senate is reviewing it and may make some changes.
Musk’s comments came after top Republicans, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, pushed back against him. Last week, Musk told CBS News Sunday Morning that the bill hurt the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which he used to lead.
In response, Johnson said in TV interviews that he sent Musk a long message explaining what’s in the bill. He also explained that this bill uses a special process that avoids the usual Senate delays.
Johnson also announced a new $9.4 billion package that will make official cuts to U.S. foreign aid and public broadcasting. The White House plans to send this package to the Senate on Tuesday.
Musk posted again, warning that the bill would grow the country’s budget deficit to $2.5 trillion. He said this would put a big financial burden on American people.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to Musk’s criticism. She said the president already knows what Musk thinks, and it hasn’t changed his mind.
Last week, Musk also stepped down from his role as a special employee working with the U.S. government.
