President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently met with the suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at his home in Lagos. This was their first private meeting since the political problems that caused Emergency Rule to be declared in Rivers State.
The meeting happened months after President Tinubu removed the Rivers State government on March 18, 2025. Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire House of Assembly were suspended because the state was facing serious insecurity and poor leadership.
After removing the government, President Tinubu appointed Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, a retired Chief of Naval Staff, to act as the Sole Administrator for six months. His job is to bring peace and stability to Rivers State.
Since being suspended, Governor Fubara stayed quiet but recently said he supports President Tinubu’s decision. He believes the Emergency Rule was the right choice to help calm the state.
Last week, Fubara spoke to the people of Rivers State. He promised the Emergency Rule would end soon. He also said he plans to come back to his position with his team.
Fubara also suggested he might make peace with his political mentor, Nyesom Wike, who is now the Federal Capital Territory Minister. Their long fight was one of the reasons for the unrest in Rivers State.
But Nyesom Wike said in a news briefing that President Tinubu did not talk to him before starting Emergency Rule. Wike said if he had been informed, he would not have agreed to the move.
