Bayern Munich, the German champions, have confirmed the signing of Jonathan Tah. He joins them on a free transfer from their Bundesliga competitors, Bayer Leverkusen.
The 29-year-old defender announced in April that he would leave Leverkusen after spending ten years with the club. Now, he has signed a contract with Bayern Munich that will keep him at the Allianz Arena until 2029.
After a decade at Bayer Leverkusen, Jonathan Tah moves to Bayern Munich, where he is expected to strengthen the team’s defense.
Tah expressed his excitement about joining Bayern, saying, “I’m very happy to be here. I want to take on responsibility and work hard every day to help the team succeed and win many trophies together.”
Max Eberl, Bayern’s board member responsible for sports, revealed that the club has been interested in Tah for a long time. He added, “We value his skills and his leadership qualities. Jonathan had many options, but we are pleased he chose Bayern.”
Christoph Freund, the sporting director, said, “We have signed a player with international experience and great quality. Jonathan will quickly fit into our defense and will be an important part of the team, thanks to his skills and leadership.”
Jonathan Tah started his professional career at Hamburg as a talented 17-year-old during the 2013/14 season, playing 16 matches in the top league.
He then spent a year in the second division with Fortuna Düsseldorf before moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. Tah became a regular starter right away and grew into a senior German national team player, making his international debut against England in March 2016.
Tah played a vital role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 2023/24 season under coach Xabi Alonso, scoring four goals in 31 Bundesliga games. Over ten years, he appeared in 402 matches for Leverkusen across all competitions.
