Nigeria will have emperor as President if PDP crumbles – Sule Lamido

Former Governor Sule Lamido believes Nigeria could face serious trouble if the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) falls apart. He warns that without the PDP, the country might end up with an emperor-like leader.

Sule Lamido, the former Governor of Jigawa State, recently shared his views during an interview on Channels Television’s “Political Paradigm.” He expressed deep concern about the future of Nigeria’s democracy if the PDP no longer exists.

Lamido, who helped start the PDP, said the party has played a key role in Nigeria’s political development. According to him, Nigeria’s future is tied to the survival of the PDP. He explained that the party’s presence ensures balance and keeps the ruling government in check.

He strongly believes that if the PDP collapses, Nigeria could collapse as well. Without a strong opposition, Lamido said the country might end up with a leader who acts like an emperor—someone with too much power and no one to challenge them. He added that emperors often destroy themselves because of greed. To him, the PDP is not just a political party, but a part of Nigeria’s 25-year democratic history.

Lamido also reminded Nigerians that the PDP helped restore democracy in 1999. Without that, he believes Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC) would never have become President in 2015.

He added that the current President, Bola Tinubu, who took over from Buhari in 2023, also owes his rise to the democratic foundation built by the PDP.

Finally, Lamido made it clear that President Tinubu needs the PDP more than anyone else. According to him, the opposition party helps keep the President on his toes and accountable. Without it, there would be no one to watch over him, and that could lead to unchecked power.
