Many Nigerians can no longer afford eggs — Poultry farmers lament

The Poultry Farmers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) has raised concerns that many Nigerians can no longer afford eggs due to the ongoing economic challenges.

Hussaini Gumel, the head of the PFAN chapter in Jigawa State, expressed this worry during a visit to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse, the state capital, on Thursday.

Gumel explained that the removal of the fuel subsidy has had a severe impact on their business. “Since the removal of the fuel subsidy, things have become really difficult for us. Many Nigerians can no longer purchase eggs, and our sales have dropped significantly,” he said.

He attributed the sales decline to the increasing economic struggles faced by most Nigerians. “We’re finding it hard to keep our businesses afloat. There’s no demand for our eggs, and the lack of sufficient funds among people is alarming,” Gumel added, warning that the industry might soon collapse.

Currently, a crate of eggs is sold in Nigerian markets for between N5,700 and N6,000, depending on the region.
