Gunmen kill 6 residents in fresh Plateau attack

Six people lost their lives in a fresh attack by armed men in Marit and Gashish villages, located in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The sad event took place on Monday, May 5, 2025, and left several others injured and receiving treatment in hospitals.

According to local reports, the attackers invaded the villages during the night while many residents were asleep.

Stephen Pwajok Gyang, the Chairman of Barkin Ladi, confirmed the attack through a statement released by his press secretary, Mercy Yop. He said all the victims were buried in a mass grave on the same day.

In the statement, the chairman strongly condemned the attack and called on the government and security forces to take quick and effective steps to stop further killings.

Pwajok visited the injured victims at Barkin Ladi General Hospital. He said he was deeply saddened and disappointed by the return of violence, especially as the local leaders are working hard to build peace in the area.

He appreciated the work of local vigilantes and security personnel and encouraged them to stay alert and take more active steps to stop future attacks. He said violence must not be allowed to continue and urged everyone—community leaders, residents, and security forces—to work together for peace.

The chairman also prayed for peace and comfort for the grieving families and urged medical workers to give quick care to those wounded in the attack.

This latest attack comes just two weeks after similar deadly incidents in Bokkos and Bassa communities. Those attacks between March and April 2025 claimed over 100 lives, including many women and children.
