Five children tragically lost their lives after being trapped in an abandoned, non-functional vehicle in Agyaragu, Obi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State. The heartbreaking event occurred on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at around 3:00 pm, leaving the community in deep mourning.
The deceased children were identified as Kamsi Onah (8), Somer Onah (6), Unice Udouchi (10), Nmasoma Nnaji (10), and Chioma Nnaji (8).
Comrade Samuel Akala, Publicity Secretary of the Migili Youth Association (MYA), confirmed the incident. He stated that some of the children passed away at the scene, while others were pronounced dead at Aroh Hospital in Agyaragu.
According to Akala, the tragic occurrence has been reported to the police at Duglu Trailer Park. The bodies of the children have since been deposited at the mortuary in Lafia, the state capital.
The Nasarawa State Police spokesperson, SP Ramhan Nansel, issued a statement confirming the incident. He revealed that the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the children’s deaths.
On May 4, 2025, at 5:30 pm, a resident of Agyaragu, Mr. Ozimna Ogbor, reported to the Agyaragu Divisional Police Headquarters that five children were found unconscious inside an abandoned vehicle in the compound of Mr. Abu Agyeme, another local resident.
The police team, acting on directives from the Commissioner of Police, immediately visited the location. Upon arrival, they discovered the children locked inside the car. The victims were rushed to Aro Hospital, where doctors confirmed they had died from suspected suffocation.
This tragedy echoes a similar incident in August 2019, when two children in Keffi died under comparable circumstances. The Commissioner of Police expressed his condolences to the grieving families and reiterated the importance of keeping abandoned vehicles secure to prevent such incidents.
Due to severe heat burns on the bodies, the parents of the deceased requested their release for burial.
