2027: Only a strong Northern candidate can challenge Tinubu – Dele Momodu

Dele Momodu, a well-known journalist and member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that only a strong candidate from Northern Nigeria can truly compete with President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Speaking on Arise TV on April 30, Momodu criticized the state of politics in Nigeria today. He said it has become more about personal gain than about helping the people. He compared politics to a magic trick—where “the more you look, the less you see.”

Momodu believes many Northerners feel left out under Tinubu’s leadership. He says there is a belief that the President favors his Southern supporters more. Because of this, he thinks Northern voters may be motivated to support a candidate from their region.

“If you want to defeat Tinubu, you need a strong Northern candidate,” he said. “A Southern candidate alone won’t be enough to win.”

Momodu also talked about forming alliances with powerful Northern politicians, such as Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, to increase the opposition’s chances. He pointed out that the PDP is currently divided—some members are exploring coalition talks, while others are staying loyal to the party.

He shared a recent conversation with the Governor of Bauchi, who believes the PDP should stay united and try to attract more people. However, Momodu warned that if the party refuses to change, it may end up like old political parties that no longer exist, such as the UPN and NPN.

Momodu defended former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against rumors that he might join the ruling APC. He said that idea is false and that the APC itself has too many internal problems to offer real solutions.

In the end, he stressed the need for unity, strategic planning, and strong leadership, especially from the North, if the opposition hopes to challenge President Tinubu in 2027.
