Late gospel singer, Osinachi’s husband sentenced to death by hanging

Peter Nwachukwu, the husband of late gospel singer Osinachi, has been sentenced to death by hanging. The verdict was given today, April 28, by Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja.

The court found Nwachukwu guilty of causing Osinachi’s death on April 8, 2022. The judge ruled that the prosecution successfully proved the case against him.

Nwachukwu was first arraigned on June 3, 2022, by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. He faced a 23-count charge, including culpable homicide (punishable by death), cruelty to children, criminal intimidation, and spousal abuse.

The prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two of the couple’s children. They also presented 25 documents as evidence. Nwachukwu testified in his defense, called four witnesses, and submitted four documents.

Before the sentencing, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, asked the court to be merciful. However, the prosecution lawyer, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, urged the court to enforce the full weight of the law.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1. On other charges, he received two years imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18. He also got six months in prison on Count 10, three years on Count 11, and fines of ₦500,000 and ₦200,000 on Counts 6 and 7.

This judgment marks a major development in the case that shocked many Nigerians and the gospel music community.
