Former South Korea President Moon Jae-in indicted for corruption

Former South Korean President Moon Jae-in has been indicted on corruption charges related to his son-in-law’s job at a low-cost airline.

According to the Jeonju District Prosecutors’ Office, Moon allegedly accepted 217 million won (about $150,000) to help his son-in-law get a position at Thai Eastar Jet, even though the son-in-law had no relevant experience in the airline industry.

The prosecution claims that the appointment was an attempt by the airline, influenced by a former member of Moon’s Democratic Party, to gain political favor.

Moon’s son-in-law was appointed managing director at the airline and did not perform his duties properly. Investigators believe the salary and benefits he received from 2018 to 2020 were not legitimate wages but rather bribes intended for Moon.

This indictment comes during a time of political unrest in South Korea, with the country gearing up for elections in June 2023. It follows the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol for briefly imposing martial law in December, and Yoon now faces trial on charges of insurrection.

Moon, who served as president from 2017 to 2022, was known for his progressive policies and efforts to engage with North Korea. He played a key role in talks between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and then-U.S. President Donald Trump.

The indictment adds to a history of legal issues faced by former South Korean presidents. Both Lee Myung-bak and Park Geun-hye were convicted of corruption and served time in prison. Moon’s predecessor, Roh Moo-hyun, died by suicide in 2009 amid a corruption investigation involving his family.

Moon’s political party, the Democratic Party, has criticized the indictment, calling it politically motivated. A party spokesperson argued that the charge was simply an attempt to shame a former president, questioning the logic behind the accusations.
