Former footballer Eni Aluko has spoken out about how male pundits, like Ian Wright, may be taking up too much space in women’s football broadcasting.
Aluko, who used to play for England and Chelsea, shared her thoughts during an interview on BBC Radio Four’s Woman’s Hour. She said that while Ian Wright is a great broadcaster and a strong supporter of women’s football, he should also be aware of how often he appears in media about the women’s game.
“There aren’t a lot of jobs in women’s football broadcasting,” Aluko explained. “If there were equal chances for women to work in men’s football media, this wouldn’t be a big issue. But that’s not the case. Women don’t have the same opportunities, especially in men’s sports.”
When asked if she thinks it’s wrong for Ian Wright to be a leading voice in women’s football, Aluko said it’s not about being right or wrong. Instead, she said it’s about being aware and making sure women have chances to grow in the media side of the women’s game.
“The women’s game is still growing,” she added. “There aren’t many roles yet, so men need to realize this and help women build their careers too.”
Ian Wright, a former Arsenal star, has worked on women’s football podcasts and often talks about the sport with other media figures like Kelly Cates. He has also defended female pundits in the past, saying they’ve earned their spots and shouldn’t have to deal with online abuse.
Eni Aluko herself has faced criticism in the past, as have other well-known female pundits like Alex Scott and Karen Carney.
