Bode George, a top leader in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has criticized Atiku Abubakar for visiting former President Muhammadu Buhari. Atiku visited Buhari as part of his plans to build a political coalition ahead of the 2027 elections.
George said he was disappointed because Atiku didn’t involve other PDP members before taking his idea to Buhari, who is from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku has been calling for opposition parties to join forces and form a “mega party” to defeat President Bola Tinubu in 2027.
But George believes this idea is not about unity. Instead, he thinks it’s all about Atiku’s personal ambition to become president again. Speaking on Arise TV’s The Morning Show, George questioned why Atiku would meet with Buhari—a man who beat him in the 2019 election.
George said Atiku should have discussed his coalition idea within the PDP before going public. He also asked why most of the people who went with Atiku to see Buhari were from the northern region of Nigeria. He suggested this move could divide the country politically between the North and South.
George also reminded people that Atiku had already gotten the PDP presidential ticket twice—in 2019 and 2023. He questioned if Atiku was trying to take over the party for his own use, ignoring the idea of rotating the presidency between the North and South every eight years.
Instead of pushing for a new party, George urged Atiku and others to return to the PDP and work together to make the party stronger for the 2027 elections.
