The Premier League could have a record-breaking seven teams in the UEFA Champions League next season.
England is already sure of having five spots in next season’s competition. This became official after Arsenal beat Real Madrid 3-0 in their Champions League quarter-final first leg. They later won 2-1 at the Bernabeu and will now play against Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
Manchester United also has a chance to join the Champions League if they win the Europa League. Even though their league form has been poor and they are currently in 14th place, they are still in the Europa League semi-finals after defeating Lyon 7-6 on aggregate. They will face Athletic Bilbao next, and winning the tournament will give them a Champions League ticket.
Arsenal is currently second in the Premier League, just behind leaders Liverpool. This position should be enough to secure their spot in next season’s Champions League. But even if they fall out of the top five, they can still qualify by winning the Champions League.
If Arsenal wins the Champions League and finishes outside the top five, and if Manchester United wins the Europa League, then seven English teams would qualify for the Champions League next season — the top five, plus the Champions League and Europa League winners.
It would be a historic moment for English football, having so many teams playing at the highest level in Europe.
