Judge blocks President Trump from deporting hundreds of migrants from four countries

A federal judge has stopped former President Trump’s plan to deport hundreds of thousands of migrants from four countries — Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela.

Judge Indira Talwani, who works in Boston, ruled that the government can’t take away legal protection from these migrants without reviewing each case one by one. The Trump administration had told them to leave the U.S. by April 24 or face arrest and deportation.

These migrants came to the U.S. legally under a program created by the Biden administration called CHNV. Under this program, over 500,000 people were allowed to fly to the U.S. if they had someone here to sponsor them. They were given a special legal status called immigration parole and were allowed to live and work in the U.S. for two years.

Judge Talwani said it’s unfair to take away their legal status all at once without looking at each case. She also said doing this would hurt the rule of law.

This decision is a big relief for those migrants and supports the Biden policy that aimed to reduce illegal border crossings by offering a legal way to enter the country. However, some Republican-led states have been fighting this program in court, saying the federal government shouldn’t use this kind of authority to let in so many people at once.
