EFCC arraigns Chinese national over alleged false information

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Lagos has taken a Chinese man, Liu Beixiang, to court for allegedly giving false information. He was brought before Justice Ayokule Faji at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday.

According to EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, Liu is being tried for giving fake information to an EFCC officer. The charge says that Liu, also known as Lao Liu, knowingly gave false details to a government officer in December 2024.

Liu pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him.

The EFCC lawyer, Babatunde Sonoiki, asked the court to pick a date for the trial and requested that Liu be kept in prison until then.

Liu’s lawyer, F.A. Dalmeda, told the court that they have asked for a plea bargain and also applied for bail. He said EFCC just responded to the bail request and asked the court for a new date to give an update on the plea bargain.

The judge then set the next court date for June 23, 2025, and ordered that Liu be held in a correctional center until then.
