The US military has removed Colonel Susannah Meyers from her position as commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland. This decision came shortly after she disagreed with political comments made by US Vice President JD Vance during his visit to the base.
During a press conference on March 28, Vice President Vance said that Denmark, which owns Greenland, was not doing a good job managing the island or taking care of security in the Arctic. In response, Colonel Meyers sent an email to base staff on March 31. In it, she said that Vance’s views did not represent the base’s position. She also said she wasn’t trying to get involved in politics but wanted to keep unity among the American and international staff at the base.
The US Space Force confirmed her removal, saying that military commanders must remain neutral and not take political sides. They did not share more details, but Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell later said that anyone trying to go against the chain of command or President Trump’s agenda would not be tolerated.
President Trump has often talked about how important Greenland is to US security. He has criticized how Denmark manages the island and has even suggested the US should take control of it.
Colonel Shawn Lee has now taken over as the new commander of Pituffik Space Base, which is an important part of US defense in the Arctic region.
