Europa League: At least I’ve lifted trophies – Onana hits back at Nemanja Matic

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has responded to criticism from former player Nemanja Matic. Matic, who now plays for Lyon, had called Onana one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United’s history after Onana said his team was better than Lyon ahead of their Europa League quarterfinal match.

In a recent press conference, Onana stated, “It’s not going to be easy, but I think we are way better than them…” This comment angered Matic, who hit back by calling Onana one of the worst goalkeepers in the club’s history.

However, Onana quickly clarified on social media that he never meant to disrespect Lyon, explaining, “We know tomorrow will be a difficult game against a strong opponent. We focus on preparing a performance to make our fans proud.”

Onana also took the opportunity to remind Matic that he has won trophies with Manchester United, saying, “At least I’ve lifted trophies with the greatest club in the world. Some can’t say the same.” Onana won the FA Cup in 2024, while Matic, despite his time at Manchester United, left the club in 2022 without a major trophy.

The tension between the two players adds more excitement to the upcoming Europa League game between Manchester United and Lyon.
