House of Reps warns Rivers sole administrator against making laws, says he has no powers to do such

The House of Representatives has told the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas (retd.), that he does not have the legal right to make laws or create a new budget for the state.

This warning comes after Admiral Ibas said he would prepare a new budget to run the state for the next six months. His plan followed the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March. But many people, including lawmakers, have strongly disagreed with his move.

Speaking to Punch, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, Philip Agbese, said Speaker Tajudeen Abbas is working with other House leaders to create a committee. This group will keep an eye on Admiral Ibas and make sure he does not go beyond his powers.

According to the House of Reps, only elected lawmakers have the authority to make laws and approve budgets. They say Admiral Ibas should not take on powers that don’t belong to him.
