Abia Chief Judge unhappy over large number of awaiting trial inmates

Justice Lilian Abai, the Chief Judge of Abia State, has freed two inmates and granted bail to 15 others at the Aba Correctional Centre. This happened during a jail delivery exercise aimed at reducing the high number of awaiting trial inmates.

During the event, Justice Abai expressed concern about the large number of inmates waiting for trial. She urged Magistrates in the state to be more considerate when granting bail, especially for minor offenses. She also called on officials at the Nigeria Correctional Centre to ensure that inmates are taken to court as required. Additionally, she requested a detailed list of inmates with minor offenses for future jail delivery exercises.

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Abia State, Mrs. A.O. Chinedu, praised the Chief Judge for her efforts in promoting justice.

Similarly, the Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA) Aba branch, Mrs. Esther Dim Oriaku, also expressed concern over the high number of awaiting trial inmates.

She advised the freed inmates to become responsible and productive members of society.

The jail delivery exercise highlights the need for reforms in the judicial and correctional systems to ensure justice for all.
