Rangers’ technical adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, has admitted that his team did not take Akwa United seriously in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 28 clash in Enugu.
The game at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium ended in a 1-1 draw, with Rangers struggling to break down their opponents. Akwa United took the lead in the first half through Osoba Kabir, but Rangers equalized in the second half when Isaac Saviour scored from the penalty spot.
After the match, Ilechukwu expressed his disappointment, saying his players assumed the game would be easy because Akwa United has been struggling this season.
“I think we did not give our best in the first half, maybe because of Akwa United’s position in the league table, and it almost cost us the match,” Ilechukwu said.
He added that the result was a setback for Rangers, who had hoped to secure all three points.
“I feel my players underrated our opponent. This result is a big setback for our ambitions,” he stated.
Rangers will now have to refocus as they prepare for their next NPFL fixture.
